Dashashwamedh vs Assi vs Namo Ghat: which boarding ghat is best?
Pick Dashashwamedh Ghat if you want the iconic central Varanasi experience and the evening Ganga Aarti at its source. Pick Assi Ghat (southern end) for a calmer sunrise ride with Subah-e-Banaras music on the steps. Pick Namo Ghat (northern end) if you want the easiest parking, the best accessibility and the least crowded approach. The same boats and the same prices are available from all three on GhatGo — the choice is about vibe, not cost.
Dashashwamedh Ghat — the iconic central ghat
Dashashwamedh is the ghat almost every Varanasi photograph is taken from. It sits in the middle of the long bend of the river, right opposite where the Ganga Aarti is performed every evening by a synchronised line of priests. Boats boarding here drift past the most historically important stretch of the city — Kashi Vishwanath, the cremation ghat of Manikarnika and the dozen ghats in between.
The trade-off is density. The lanes leading to the ghat are narrow and packed, especially in the evening; parking is at least a 5–10 minute walk away; and the steps themselves are steep. If your main goal is the iconic aarti experience, the friction is worth it.
Assi Ghat — calm, southern, great for sunrise
Assi sits at the southern end of the operational ghat stretch, where the small Assi river meets the Ganga. Mornings here are famously calm: the Subah-e-Banaras programme (classical music, yoga and a brief sunrise aarti) starts before first light and gives the ghat a distinct, unhurried character.
Sunrise rides from Assi feel less commercial than from Dashashwamedh. The boat heads north along the ghats, which puts the rising sun at your back — ideal for photographing the painted ghat facades in even light. There is moderate parking in the lanes around the ghat and a few cafes and bookshops for breakfast after the ride.
Namo Ghat — modern, accessible, easier parking
Namo Ghat is the newest of the major ghats. It was rebuilt with a paved approach, dedicated parking and ramps, making it by far the easiest ghat to arrive at. The signature “namaste” sculpture on the steps is a popular photograph spot.
Boats from Namo travel south, covering a different (and less photographed) part of the city than boats from Dashashwamedh or Assi. The northern stretch is quieter, with fewer cremation pyres and more residential activity — a good fit for families with kids or anyone who finds the central ghats overwhelming.

What about Raj Ghat and Tulsi Ghat?
GhatGo also operates from Raj Ghat and Tulsi Ghat. Both are quieter alternatives in between the three main options above. They suit photographers who want to launch into less-trafficked stretches of the river and avoid the central crush, particularly in peak season. The same boats and prices are available; the trade-off is fewer evening boats and limited late-night transport in the lanes around them.
