Best time to visit Varanasi (season-by-season guide)

The best time to visit Varanasi is October to March, when the weather is cool, the river is clear and every slot — sunrise, sunset, Ganga Aarti — runs reliably. November brings Dev Deepawali, the most spectacular evening on the ghats. April to June is hot but cheap and works well if you stick to sunrise rides. July to September (monsoon) is atmospheric and lightly visited, but boat operations may pause if the Ganga rises.

Winter (October – February)

Winter is the canonical “best time” for Varanasi. Day temperatures sit between 10–25°C from late November through February, the river runs clear, mornings are misty, and every slot — sunrise, sunset, Ganga Aarti — runs reliably. November is special: Dev Deepawali (Kartik Purnima) sees every ghat lit with lakhs of diyas and ranks as the single most spectacular evening of the Varanasi calendar. Book boats and hotels at least a week in advance for late October to mid-January, and 7–10 days ahead specifically for Dev Deepawali.

Spring (March)

March is the shoulder month — days warm to 25–30°C, the crowds thin from mid-month onward, and prices begin to ease. Holi (early-to-mid March) is a major draw if you want to see the city at its most chaotic and colourful; boat services typically run a reduced schedule on Holi day itself. The lanes of old Banaras are at their best for walking in March before the heat sets in.

Summer (April – June)

Summer is hot — highs of 40–45°C in May and June. The trick is to compress your day: do sunrise boat rides, see Sarnath in the morning, eat a long lunch indoors, rest through the heat, then walk the ghats again from 5 PM. Hotel prices drop noticeably, the river is lightly trafficked, and Ganga Dussehra (May / June) is a quieter but atmospheric festival to plan around.

Monsoon (July – September)

The monsoon trades comfort for atmosphere. Temperatures are mild (25–35°C) but humidity is high and rain is heavy in July and August. The Ganga rises sharply; boat operations continue while it is safe but may pause for days if the river is in spate. If your booking is affected, email services@ghatgo.com with your booking reference and we will arrange a reschedule or full refund through that channel (see our safety guide) — GhatGo does not auto-cancel bookings on your behalf. Crowds are at their lowest, light is soft and overcast, and the city feels different in a way photographers appreciate.
