Dev Deepawali in Varanasi: complete guide (2026)

Dev Deepawali 2026 in Varanasi falls on Tuesday, 24 November 2026, the day of Kartik Purnima. After sunset every one of the city's eighty-plus ghats is lit with lakhs of earthen diyas, followed by a ceremonial Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, a laser and projection show on the Chet Singh Ghat facade, and fireworks over the river. It is the single most spectacular evening of the Varanasi calendar, and the river itself is the best place to watch it from.

When is Dev Deepawali 2026?

Dev Deepawali 2026 is on Tuesday, 24 November 2026. The festival always falls on Kartik Purnima — the full moon of the Hindu month of Kartik — which lands fifteen days after Diwali, so the Gregorian date shifts each year. It is observed in mid-to-late November in most years.

What Dev Deepawali actually is

Dev Deepawali — also written Dev Deepavali or Dev Diwali, literally “the Diwali of the gods” — marks Lord Shiva's victory over the demon Tripurasura. The belief is that on this night the gods themselves descend to bathe in the Ganga at Kashi, and the city lights every step of every ghat to welcome them. Devotees take a holy dip at dawn, and from dusk the riverfront becomes an unbroken ribbon of flame several kilometres long.

It is not a small or purely local affair. The lighting is coordinated across the full sweep of the riverfront, and the district administration adds a ceremonial Maha Ganga Aarti, a laser and light-projection show, and a fireworks display. Crowds run into the lakhs, roads near the ghats are closed to traffic, and hotels across the city sell out weeks ahead.

What happens on the evening

Timings shift a little each year with the administration's schedule, which is finalised close to the date. The running order is reliably:

  1. 4:45 PMCast off as the first diyas are lit. The boat pulls away just as the riverfront starts to light up. This is the golden window for photographs — daylight on the ghats, flame on the steps.
  2. 5:45 PMCruise the full riverfront. Ghat by ghat down the crescent, with your boatman naming each one and what it is known for, while the diya count on the steps climbs into the lakhs.
  3. 6:30 PMAnchor for the Maha Ganga Aarti. We hold position opposite Dashashwamedh Ghat for the ceremonial Dev Deepawali aarti — conch, brass lamps and chanting, seen from the water rather than the crush of the steps.
  4. 7:30 PMLaser & projection show at Chet Singh Ghat. The boat repositions for the laser show, which is projected onto the ghat facade specifically to be viewed from mid-river.
  5. 8:00 PMFireworks finale. The fireworks display closes the evening over open water, mirrored in the Ganga right below you.
  6. 8:30 PMReturn to Namo Ghat. Back at the boarding ghat. Total time on the water is a minimum of three hours, and we do not cut the evening short if the schedule runs late.

Why the river is the best vantage point

The ghats themselves are shoulder-to-shoulder by late afternoon. Roads are closed, the steps are packed, and from any single ghat you can only ever see your own stretch of the riverfront. A boat solves all three problems at once: you glide past the whole crescent, you have a seat, and you keep an unobstructed line of sight to the aarti, the lasers and the fireworks for the entire evening.

The laser and projection show is the clearest case. It is staged on the Chet Singh Ghat facade and designed to be watched from the water — from land you are either too close, at the wrong angle, or behind a crowd. The fireworks, likewise, burst over open water and double in the river's reflection, which you simply cannot see from the steps.

Boarding from Namo Ghat

We board from Namo Ghat deliberately. It is the newest ghat at the northern end of the riverfront, with the widest approach, real parking and the least congested access on a night when most ghat lanes are shut to traffic. It also puts you upstream of the crowds, so the cruise opens out in front of you rather than fighting through it. Plan to arrive by 4:15 PM — the last stretch is usually on foot.

Practical planning notes

Reach Namo Ghat early

Roads around the ghats are closed to traffic on Dev Deepawali evening. Plan to be at Namo Ghat by 4:15 PM — the last stretch is usually on foot, and boats cannot wait past cast-off.

Dress for the river at night

Late November evenings on the water are genuinely cold once the sun drops. Carry a jacket or shawl, and wear flat shoes you can walk the ghat steps in.

Photography is welcome

Personal cameras and phones are welcome throughout. Please avoid flash during the aarti. Drones are not permitted anywhere near the ghats on festival nights.

Timings are indicative

The aarti, laser show and fireworks follow the district administration’s schedule, which is finalised close to the date. We confirm your exact boarding time on WhatsApp before the event.

Families and elders

The boats are stable, seated and railed, and life jackets are provided for everyone on board. Tell us at pre-booking if you are travelling with children or elders and we will seat you on the lower deck.

Safety first, always

Every boat is a verified GhatGo partner vessel with a licensed boatman. If the river or weather is declared unsafe, we reschedule or refund in full rather than sail.

Regular boat rides do not run that evening

Worth knowing if you are planning a multi-day trip: on 24 Nov 2026 the entire fleet and every crew is committed to the ticketed Dev Deepawali experience. Regular sunrise, sunset and private charters, and the daily Ganga Aarti seating, are not sold for that date. Plan those for the day before or after — see our two-day Varanasi itinerary for a workable shape.

How to book

GhatGo runs a dedicated Dev Deepawali boat ride at ₹3,000 per person, all inclusive, for a minimum of three hours on the water. It covers the full-riverfront cruise, the Maha Ganga Aarti, the laser show and the fireworks. Seats are capped and paid online, so they are confirmed the moment payment succeeds.

Frequently asked questions

When is Dev Deepawali 2026 in Varanasi?

Dev Deepawali 2026 in Varanasi falls on Tuesday, 24 November 2026, the day of Kartik Purnima. Every ghat on the riverfront is lit with lakhs of earthen diyas after sunset, followed by a grand Ganga Aarti, a laser and projection show, and a fireworks display over the river.

What is Dev Deepawali and why is it celebrated?

Dev Deepawali — also written Dev Deepavali or Dev Diwali — falls on Kartik Purnima, the full moon of the month of Kartik, fifteen days after Diwali. It marks Lord Shiva’s victory over the demon Tripurasura, and the belief that the gods themselves descend to bathe in the Ganga at Kashi. Devotees light earthen lamps on every step of every ghat to welcome them.

Why is a boat the best place to watch Dev Deepawali?

From any single ghat you only ever see your own stretch of the riverfront, and the steps are shoulder-to-shoulder by late afternoon. From mid-river you glide past the whole crescent of lit ghats, you have a seat, and you keep an unobstructed line of sight to the aarti, the laser show at Chet Singh Ghat and the fireworks for the entire evening.

Can I see the laser show and fireworks from the boat?

Yes — better than from land. The Dev Deepawali laser and projection show is staged on the Chet Singh Ghat facade and designed to be viewed from the river, and the fireworks burst over open water. From mid-stream you get an unobstructed line of sight to both, without standing in the ghat crowds.

How early should I book for Dev Deepawali?

As early as you can. Dev Deepawali is the single busiest evening of the Varanasi calendar and the number of boats permitted on the river that night is capped. Seats routinely sell out weeks ahead, so book as soon as your travel dates are fixed.

Is the Dev Deepawali boat ride suitable for families and elders?

Yes. The boats are large, seated, railed and stable, life jackets are provided for every guest, and a licensed boatman with a GhatGo crew member is on board throughout. Mention children or elders at booking and we will allocate lower-deck seating with easier boarding.

What happens if the weather is bad on Dev Deepawali?

We never sail against a safety advisory. If the river is unsafe or local authorities suspend boating, we reschedule you or refund the booking in full. Email services@ghatgo.com with your booking reference and our team resolves it through that channel.

Are regular boat rides and Ganga Aarti seating available on Dev Deepawali?

No. On 24 Nov 2026 the entire fleet runs the ticketed Dev Deepawali experience, so regular sunrise, sunset and private boat rides and the daily Ganga Aarti seating are not sold for that evening. Book the Dev Deepawali boat ride instead.
