Varanasi to Sarnath day trip: cab fare, things to do, timings

Sarnath is about 12 km from central Varanasi and takes 30–40 minutes by cab. The site holds Dhamek Stupa, the Sarnath Archaeological Museum (home of the original Lion Capital of Ashoka), Mulagandha Kuti Vihar, the Ashoka Pillar ruins and the Buddhist meditation park. A half-day visit is plenty. On GhatGo, Sarnath is booked under the Sight Seeing local package alongside BHU and Kashi Vishwanath, starting at ₹2,600 in a Swift Dzire.

How far is Sarnath from Varanasi?

Sarnath is about 12 km north-east of central Varanasi (Dashashwamedh Ghat). The drive takes 30–40 minutes through the city and out via the Sarnath road. From Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport (Babatpur) Sarnath is even closer at about 22 km — the site sits roughly between the airport and the city, so airport pickups often add Sarnath as a stop on the way to the hotel.

Sarnath cab fare (via the Sight Seeing package)

GhatGo offers Sarnath as part of the Sight Seeing local-day package on the cab booking page, which combines Sarnath, BHU (Banaras Hindu University) and Kashi Vishwanath in a single loop — the most popular half-day itinerary in Varanasi. Live fares for that package:

What is there to see in Sarnath?

  • Dhamek Stupa. The cylindrical brick-and-stone stupa that marks the spot where the Buddha is said to have given his first sermon. The lower band is inscribed with intricate Gupta-period carvings. Allow 30–45 minutes.
  • Sarnath Archaeological Museum. India’s oldest site museum, and the single most important reason to visit Sarnath. It holds the original Lion Capital of Ashoka — the four-lion sculpture that is India’s national emblem. Allow 45–60 minutes.
  • Mulagandha Kuti Vihar. A 20th-century temple with detailed murals by Japanese artist Kosetsu Nosu and the modern Bodhi tree planted from a cutting of the original at Bodh Gaya. Allow 20 minutes.
  • Ashoka Pillar ruins. The remains of the original pillar; the now-emblem capital was lifted from here to the museum next door.
  • Chaukhandi Stupa. Mound stupa at the entrance to Sarnath, traditionally marking the spot where Buddha first met his five disciples.
  • Meditation park. Quiet, landscaped, free entry. Worth a 20 minute walk if you have time.

Best time to visit

October to March is the comfortable season; the site is mostly open-air. Visit on a weekday morning to avoid school groups and tour buses, and check the museum is open before you leave — it is closed on Fridays. For peak weather and clearest light, November to February is ideal.
